The Trump administration’s new U.S. National Security Strategy delivers an unusually blunt warning to European governments, accusing them of weakening their own sovereignty and restricting free expression as large-scale migration reshapes the continent. The document frames the situation as a civilizational crisis, arguing that Western civilization itself could face “erasure” unless Europe changes course.

The 33-page strategy states that Europe’s economic challenges are now overshadowed by what it calls the more serious prospect of long-term cultural and demographic decline. It argues that unchecked migration, limits on political dissent, falling birthrates, and diminishing national self-confidence are all contributing to the erosion of Europe’s identity and stability. According to the text, the European Union and other supranational organizations have also undermined political liberty and national sovereignty.

The report expresses approval for the rise of nationalist and populist parties across Europe, pointing to movements such as Alternative for Germany, Spain’s Vox, France’s National Rally, and Britain’s Reform Party as signs of a “revival of spirit.” It suggests that these groups reflect a renewed commitment to Western values and claims that their growing influence is “cause for optimism.” The document adds that the United States supports its political allies in promoting this revival.

Responding to criticism from media outlets, Trump adviser Jason Miller accused Politico and its parent company Axel Springer of exerting “foreign influence” over European political narratives. The strategy also warns of a demographic shift that could lead to native Europeans becoming minorities in several countries. It argues that within a few decades, some NATO members may become “majority non-European,” a statement that has generated strong reactions across the region.

Security analyst Shashank Joshi described the document’s assessment of Europe as “shocking,” noting that it openly praises nationalist movements while condemning European migration and speech-regulation policies. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul rejected the U.S. position, stating that European societies will debate their own future without outside instruction.

Overall, the strategy marks one of the Trump administration’s sharpest confrontations with Europe’s political establishment. By combining demographic warnings with explicit support for nationalist parties, it signals a foreign-policy approach focused on safeguarding what it defines as Western cultural identity as a strategic priority.
