Three American citizens are among at least seven people who were killed when an avalanche struck a camp on Nepal’s Mount Yalung Ri, according to local police.

Two Nepali guides, a Canadian, and an Italian citizen were also killed. Authorities reported that eight people, including three foreigners and five Nepali climbers, were rescued by helicopter and sent to Kathmandu. Two bodies have been recovered, while five remain missing.

The State Department confirmed it is aware of reports of U.S. citizen deaths and is working to gather further information. A spokesperson expressed condolences and emphasized that consular assistance is available.

The climbing group, consisting of five foreign climbers and ten Nepali guides, began their ascent Monday morning. The avalanche occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time. Isabelle Thaon, a French climber who survived, described the avalanche as over 900 feet wide and moving very quickly. She and another trekker were fortunate to avoid being swept away and waited a long time for rescue.

Rescue efforts have been complicated by poor weather and the high altitude of the site, which is over 16,000 feet above sea level. Mountaineering expert Alan Arnette noted that delays significantly reduce the chances of finding survivors and stressed the importance of careful recovery to protect rescuers.

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s fourteen tallest mountains, including Mount Everest. While spring is the most popular climbing season, many climbers visit smaller peaks in autumn between the monsoon and winter. Arnette emphasized that mountaineering carries inherent risks, not only for climbers but also for those who attempt rescues.
