Before We Ask Others to Change, What About Ourselves?
Honest self-examination can turn mistakes into opportunities to rebuild trust, improve relationships and make fairer decisions.
It is easy to notice other people’s mistakes. But do we examine our own actions with the same honesty?
Self-reflection begins with simple questions: Was I fair to someone who disagreed with me? Did my words hurt anyone? Have I demanded respect while speaking harshly to others?
Taking responsibility should lead to improvement, not endless guilt. When we recognise a mistake, we have an opportunity to repair the harm and make a better choice.
A father who apologises for raising his voice, a manager who corrects an unfair decision, or a colleague who admits a mistake helps build trust. A sincere apology can teach more than a long lecture.
Accepting advice also takes humility. A useful correction may come from our children, our partners, or someone with less experience. What matters is whether the advice is true and helpful.
Self-reflection does not mean accepting mistreatment or giving up our rights. We can protect ourselves and seek justice while remaining honest and fair in our response.
Try one small step this week: Choose a habit you want to improve. Pause before answering in anger, apologise for hurtful words, or fulfil a responsibility you have neglected.
Before sleeping, ask yourself: What did I do well today? What should I put right tomorrow?
The change we hope to see in our families and communities can begin with a sincere apology, a calmer response, and a fairer decision.
