Students and staff returned to Matawan Regional High School on Friday after a bomb threat prompted a shelter in place and evacuation, according to the Aberdeen Township Police Department.

School administrators reported the threat Friday morning. District staff and police placed the building in a shelter in place while patrol officers and detectives began investigating, Police Chief Matthew Lloyd said in a statement provided to TN News.

Students and staff were then evacuated to a secure location. Police and mutual aid partners searched the school building and grounds, determined they were safe, and allowed everyone to return, Lloyd said.

Police said they take all threats seriously and will prosecute anyone found responsible. The department also said officers will continue to maintain a presence at school buildings to help protect students and staff.

The statement did not say how the threat was made or whether anyone had been identified as responsible.
