Chinese Tourist Dies After Being Stranded in Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain National Park
Tragic outcome highlights the dangers of unprepared hiking in Tasmania’s alpine wilderness

A Chinese tourist tragically died in Tasmania after her hiking group became stranded in Cradle Mountain National Park on September 26. The group of four Chinese nationals was found by another hiking party struggling with cold and harsh conditions.
The nearby group quickly alerted emergency services around 3:30 pm, leading rescuers to locate the stranded hikers later that afternoon. Due to extreme weather conditions, a helicopter rescue was impossible, forcing rescuers and the hikers to camp overnight before descending the mountain on the morning of September 27.
Tasmanian police confirmed the death of a woman from the group. Inspector Steve Jones explained that the hikers were unprepared for bushwalking in such conditions, lacking essential equipment like a personal locator beacon to call for help early.
Fortunately, the other group of walkers was able to provide some assistance with limited supplies. Police have since issued an urgent warning for anyone venturing outdoors in Tasmania: ensure you have adequate warm clothing, food, maps, torches, waterproof gear, first-aid kits, and emergency communication devices, even for short daytime hikes.
Tasmania’s alpine weather can change rapidly, making rescue efforts difficult and dangerous. Authorities urge all bushwalkers to prepare thoroughly and respect the unpredictable conditions of the wilderness.
