The 2024 update includes more than 6,000 new entries, many of which reflect viral TikTok trends, memes, and the evolving nature of digital lifestyles.
One of the more controversial additions is “tradwife” – short for “traditional wife” – which Cambridge says reflects a “growing and controversial” trend on Instagram and TikTok that promotes traditional gender roles.
The dictionary also defined “skibidi”, a gibberish term that exploded in popularity via the YouTube series Skibidi Toilet, as having no fixed meaning but used in ways that range from “cool” to “nonsense.” It's closely linked to what some call "brain rot content" — chaotic, nonsensical media that has captured the attention of Gen Alpha online.
Another entry, “delulu” – a short form of delusional – is described as:
“Believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to.”
A cited example included a 2025 Parliament speech where Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used the phrase “delulu with no solulu.”
“It’s not every day that words like skibidi and delulu end up in the Cambridge Dictionary,” said Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme Manager.
“We only add words we believe have staying power. Internet culture is transforming the English language, and it’s fascinating to capture that in real time.”
Other notable additions include:
“lewks” – Unique fashion looks, often used in drag and queer communities.
“inspo” – Short for inspiration.
“mouse jiggler” – A device or software to simulate activity while working from home.
“forever chemicals” – Toxic man-made substances that linger in the environment for decades.
The inclusion of these terms reflects the blending of digital, social, and work cultures, showing how quickly language evolves in response to technology, politics, and pop culture.
