Koalas on the Brink: How One Island Could Save an Entire Species
A disease-free island may hold the key to rescuing koalas—but genetic risks threaten the plan.

Australia’s koalas are facing a growing crisis, with a deadly strain of chlamydia spreading rapidly across mainland populations. In some areas, infection rates have reached alarming levels, causing blindness, infertility, and death.
However, hope lies in Kangaroo Island, home to the largest population of koalas free from the disease. This isolated group may act as a lifeline for the species.
Scientists from Flinders University are working on an ambitious plan to improve the genetic diversity of these koalas, then use them to repopulate affected regions across Australia.
The challenge is that these koalas descend from a very small founding group, leading to inbreeding and genetic weaknesses over time.
At the same time, koalas continue to decline due to habitat loss, climate change, and disease. A new vaccine offers hope, but applying it widely remains difficult.
To solve this, researchers plan to introduce genetically diverse males from the mainland to strengthen the population without introducing disease.
The urgency increased after the devastating Black Summer bushfires, which wiped out around 80% of the island’s koalas.
If successful, this project could save the species and become a global model for wildlife conservation.
