Laszlo Krasznahorkai Wins 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature

Hungarian author recognized for visionary works blending epic storytelling and contemplative tones

Hungarian author Laszlo Krasznahorkai has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature for his compelling and visionary body of work that, amid apocalyptic terror, affirms the power of art.

A Central European Literary Tradition

The Swedish Academy described Krasznahorkai as a great epic writer within the Central European tradition, influenced by figures such as Kafka and Thomas Bernhard, known for absurdism and grotesque excess. At the same time, he draws inspiration from Eastern contemplative styles, producing a finely tuned tone in his writing.

Background and Breakthrough

Krasznahorkai is the second Hungarian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature after Imre Kertesz in 2002. He was born in Gyula, a small town in southeast Hungary near the Romanian border. His 1985 novel Satantango marked a breakthrough in his career, depicting a destitute group living on an abandoned collective farm in rural Hungary just before the fall of communism. The novel became a literary sensation in his home country.

Creative Collaboration with Béla Tarr

Krasznahorkai collaborated closely with filmmaker Béla Tarr, who adapted several of his works into acclaimed films, including Satantango and The Werckmeister Harmonies. In 1993, Krasznahorkai won the German Bestenliste Prize for The Melancholy of Resistance.

About the Nobel Prize

The Nobel Prize, awarded by the Swedish Academy, carries a reward of 11 million kronor (approximately S$1.5 million). Established by the will of Alfred Nobel, the prize honors achievements in literature, science, and peace and has been awarded since 1901.

Historical Context and Controversies

Previous literature laureates include Sully Prudhomme, the first winner; William Faulkner; Winston Churchill; Orhan Pamuk; and Jon Fosse. The 2024 prize went to South Korean author Han Kang, the first South Korean and the 18th woman to receive the award. Over the years, the Swedish Academy’s choices have sometimes sparked debate. For example, awarding Bob Dylan in 2016 raised questions about what qualifies as literature, and Peter Handke’s 2019 prize drew criticism due to his political associations. The Academy has also faced accusations of elitism and bias, as well as overlooking some literary giants such as Tolstoy, Zola, and Joyce.
