New Yorkers Turn Gloria Steinem’s Manhattan Home Into a Living Memorial

New Yorkers and admirers of renowned American journalist, author, and activist Gloria Steinem gathered outside her Manhattan home to honor her life and extraordinary legacy.
Visitors placed flowers and handwritten messages along the sidewalk in recognition of Steinem’s decades-long commitment to women’s rights, equality, and social justice.
TN News New York documented the growing memorial as people stopped outside the residence to read the tributes, take photographs, and reflect on the impact of one of America’s most influential feminist leaders.
Among those paying tribute was Anna Mercadante, who spoke with TN News about why she came to Steinem’s home.
“I came here just to pay my respects,” Mercadante said. “Gloria has done a lot for women, and that’s why I came.”
Mercadante also praised Steinem’s articles and writing, describing her as an influential figure both personally and across society. She offered her love, prayers, and wishes of comfort during this time of mourning.
Barbara Nessim was also present outside Steinem’s home, joining those who gathered to pay their respects and honor the pioneering activist’s life and contributions.
Steinem died peacefully at her New York City home on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the age of 92. According to a statement released by her foundation, she was surrounded by loved ones. A cause of death has not been publicly announced.
Steinem was a celebrated journalist, bestselling author, organizer, and advocate who helped establish Ms. Magazine, one of the country’s most influential publications addressing women’s rights and gender equality.
She also helped establish several political and social organizations dedicated to advancing women’s rights. Her advocacy extended beyond gender equality to civil rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and broader social justice causes.
In 2013, former President Barack Obama awarded Steinem the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the United States’ highest civilian honors, in recognition of her historic contributions to American society.
Her longtime Manhattan residence, where she lived beginning in the 1960s, has now become a place of remembrance. Bouquets and messages continue to line the sidewalk as visitors celebrate a life and legacy that influenced generations.
Steinem’s work is expected to continue through her foundation and the preservation of her New York home as a center for community organizing and dialogue about women’s rights and social justice.
