NYC Begins Installing 17 Free Public Restrooms to Address Citywide Shortage

New York City has begun installing 17 new public restrooms to improve access to free, accessible facilities in busy public spaces, according to a September 18 report by Jenna Flanagan and Bob Hennelly of WBAI.
The report said Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced the installations this week, targeting public plazas and high-traffic areas where reliable restroom access is currently limited.
The initiative addresses a significant gap in the city’s public infrastructure. According to Council Member Sandy Nurse, as cited by WBAI, New York City has approximately 1,000 public toilets—roughly one for every 8,500 residents. Nurse and the Mamdani administration estimate that an additional 2,100 are needed.
The installations reflect Mamdani’s campaign pledge to improve everyday services and make New York more affordable and livable.
While the 17 new facilities represent an initial step, the estimated need highlights the scale of the challenge facing the city as it works to expand access.
