NYPD Detective Mohamed Amen Shares a Message of Faith, Compassion, and Peace
A New York City mosque sermon highlights moderation, respect for differences and shared responsibility for community well-being.
Faith is an important part of our lives, and its values should be reflected in how we treat others. Moderation, rejecting extremism, and respecting our differences help us live together in peace. In that spirit, we believe that faith belongs to God, and our shared homeland belongs to everyone.
This Friday, we share highlights from a sermon delivered by NYPD Detective Mohamed Amen at a New York City mosque. A valued member of our community, he brings his commitment to service to the pulpit, encouraging compassion, understanding, and peaceful coexistence.
His sermon explores Al-Fatihah, the Opening of the Qur’an, inviting us to understand its meaning and carry its lessons into everyday life through honesty, mercy, justice, and kindness. It also reminds worshippers that differences in religious interpretation should be approached with knowledge and respect, never division or hostility.
Among its most meaningful moments is a prayer for the city and everyone who calls it home:
“Unite their hearts. Keep violence, hatred, injustice, and division away from it. Make it a home of mercy, cooperation, dignity, and opportunity for all.”
