A political storm is brewing in the UK as Wales’ first minister, Eluned Morgan, calls for a halt to a major joint space project with the United States.

At the center of the controversy is the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) program — a collaboration between the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia. The system is designed to track objects in orbit and protect critical satellite infrastructure.

Plans include installing 27 radar dishes at a military site in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Supporters argue the project will bring long-term jobs and strengthen national security.

However, Morgan has strongly opposed the plan, citing concerns over the leadership of Donald Trump. She argued that recent rhetoric from Trump shows “contempt” for allies and raises doubts about the reliability of the US as a partner.

“The United States under Donald Trump is not the partner it once was,” she said, urging the UK government to pause the project until it aligns with shared values and security interests.

Her stance has sparked sharp reactions across the political spectrum.

Officials from Downing Street declined to directly support her position, instead emphasizing the economic and strategic benefits of the radar system. According to government representatives, the project would secure jobs in Wales and enhance satellite communication and navigation systems.

Local leaders are also divided. Some argue that rejecting the project could mean losing valuable economic opportunities, particularly in regions that rely on defense-related investment.

Critics, including opposition figures, warn that halting the project could weaken the UK’s defense capabilities at a time of growing global instability. They point to rising tensions involving countries like Russia and Iran as reasons to strengthen — not scale back — international security cooperation.

Meanwhile, supporters of Morgan’s position see the issue differently. For them, this is not just about jobs or defense — it is about trust and values in international partnerships.

The debate also has a local political dimension. The proposed site lies in an electoral constituency where Morgan faces a competitive race, leading some opponents to accuse her of making a strategic political move.

Beyond politics, the controversy highlights a broader question: how should countries balance economic benefits, national security, and political alignment with global allies?

As the discussion continues, the future of the DARC project in Wales remains uncertain — caught between strategic necessity and political tension.
